A day-and a half long disability community-driven conference exploring access under the first 25 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the road ahead for the next generation.

The conference theme "Access, Availability, Advocacy and Civil Rights!" reflects a multi-generational view of disability justice. "Access" is the equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of everyday life. "Availability" is having options and choices which increase independence and freedom. "Advocacy" is our history, the courageous actions of leaders that led to today's inclusion. And "Civil Rights" is our just claim to equal citizenship.

Participants will hear from recognized speakers and participate in breakouts to discuss strategies to increase access for people with disabilities. Pre-conference statewide community surveys revealed six priority topics, you may want consider them for your proposal:

  • Affordable and Accessible Housing
  • Employment Access and Accommodations
  • Public Safety and Police Relations
  • Protecting our Civil Rights
  • Access to Public Accommodations
  • Right to Affordable Accessible Quality Healthcare

The Steering Committee is looking to honor accomplishment and success, but wants to be surprised with new ideas in the workshop proposals. Other topics could include: community organizing and disability rights advocacy; creating barrier-free and inclusive environments; transportation equality; disability cultural competency; voting rights; youth initiatives; inclusive K-12 education; availability of accommodations on college campuses and new innovations for assistive technology… just to name a few.

Thank you to all who submitted a workshop proposal. We received many high quality submissions and the steering committee is reviewing the proposals. We will notify presenters and post the public agenda for the conference by July 20, 2015

The conference is being planned in conjunction with the Disability Unity Festival. A conference Steering Committee includes disability community organizations and stakeholders from across California.
