Webinar Announcement: 9/23 - Advocacy & Lobbying: Knowing the Difference

September 9, 2019

Please join the Disability Organizing Network for our webinar:
Advocacy & Lobbying: Knowing the Difference

DATE: Monday, September 23, 2019
TIME: 11AM-12:30PM PST

Systems Change Advocacy is at the core of the Independent Living & Disability Rights movement. Yet with changes in staff, community, leadership, and laws, many of us are receiving mixed messaging about how to achieve systems change - especially in regards to definitions of advocacy and lobbying. The presenters will not only dispel myths but will explore differences between lobbying and advocacy at a local independent living center, and will present tangible tools and strategies to achieve systems change.

Target Audience:
This webinar will specifically cover material that will speak to lobbying and advocacy in the context of the Independent Living network. Therefore, this webinar will be relevant to all independent living center staff, and other federally funded organizations. We also invite any and all partner organizations, funders, advocates and organizers.

Steve Higgins is the Executive Director of Independence Associates, Inc. located in East Bridgewater MA. He currently serves on the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) Board as the Representative for Region I and as Co-Chair of the ADA / Civil Rights Subcommittee. Additionally, Steve has served several terms as a member of the Massachusetts State Independent Living Council (SILC)

Kimberly Tissot serves as the Executive Director of Able South Carolina, which serves half the state. She currently serves as the Co-Chair of the NCIL ADA / Civil Rights Subcommittee and the NCIL Parenting Task Force, as well as many statewide boards and councils.

Notes on Accessibility:
There will be live captioning for the webinar. If you are in need of any other accommodations, please contact the Disability Organizing Network directly
