Presenter: Steve Higgins and Kimberly Tissot

Graphic of training archive for Part 1: Advocacy & Lobbying: The National Perspective

Systems Change Advocacy is at the core of the Independent Living & Disability Rights movement. Yet with changes in staff, community, leadership, and laws, many of us are receiving mixed messaging about how to achieve systems change - especially in regards to definitions of advocacy and lobbying. The presenters will not only dispel myths but will explore differences between lobbying and advocacy at a local independent living center, and will present tangible tools and strategies to achieve systems change.

This webinar is specifically focused on advocacy v. lobbying from the federal perspective. Part 2 will be a continuation of this crucial conversation, specifically from the California perspective. Date and time will be released soon.

Target Audience:

This webinar will specifically cover material that will speak to lobbying and advocacy in the context of the Independent Living network. Therefore, this webinar will be relevant to all independent living center staff, and other federally funded organizations. We also invite any and all partner organizations, funders, advocates and organizers.

Seniors and people with disabilities are beginning to engage in patterns of voting more Democratically in recent years and it is important to know how to engage their politics and discuss which issues are important to them. Her talk will focus on publicly available polling, as well as her own insight into these demographics - including the generic congressional ballot, President Trump's job approval, and voting in the 2018 election.

This webinar will explore what goes into the making of the Superfest Disability Film Festival and give participants a glance into this year's "Dissies." The Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind are pleased to announce the return of Superfest, the longest running disability film festival! This year's Superfest event will take a powerful look backward to explore the worst of the worst in the film representation of disability. We'll feature many telling examples of how far we've come and we'll highlight the worst of the worst with a new trophied award, "the Dissies." Superfest International Disability Film Festival will dazzle you with a fun evening that is sure to be filled with laughter and entertainment. Superfest is a powerful event that encourages people to discuss how representations of disabilities influence film, and how disabled individuals experience these representations. This year's Superfest will consist of a special event, "The Dissies," modeled after the acclaimed Razzies. We will contemplate disability in film by recognizing and reclaiming the more regrettable representations of disability in movies. We asked our disability communities to nominate the films in which negative portrayals of disability most affected them. We gleaned through each nomination to find the most "dis"enchanting moments to show at the festival. After showing a short clip from each nominee, the audience - you - will have the opportunity to vote for the worst of the worst.
